Computing
Subject Overview
Computing Science helps students understand how technology works and how it shapes the world. Learners develop skills in coding, web design, game development, physical computing and databases, while exploring the impact of technology on society and learning to use it safely and responsibly.

What do you learn in Computing Science?
- Software Development (Scratch/Python): Variables, sequence, selection, loops, and predefined functions.
- Web Design (HTML/CSS/JavaScript): Web structure, content tags, CSS styling, hyperlinks, and navigation.
- Games Development (Scratch/Game Maker): Sprites, objects, events, and assets.
- Physical Computing (BBC Micro:bit, Raspberry Pi) - Building and coding physical devices to solve real world solutions
- Database Development: Tables, fields, database structure, and SQL queries (select, update, delete).
- Digital Literacy: IDEA Bronze/Silver Award.

Courses
The department delivers BGE courses in S1, S2 and S3 alongside courses in National 4 and National 5 Computing Science in S4. In conjunction with Breadalbane Academy, from 2026/27 Pitlochry will deliver Higher Computing Science as a continued pathway for young people.
