Technical

Overview

 The Technical Department within Pitlochry High School comprises of a fully equipped multi-purpose workshop and also a Graphics Classroom fitted out with a suite of 1 Windows 11 desktop PC's running Serif suite X7 and Autodesk Inventor, 

At present the department offers courses/units in the following subjects/topics:

  1.  S1 (2x40 min periods) - Workshop Safety, Craft (Wood), Graphics, John Muir Outdoor Education. 

  2. S2 - (2x40 min periods) -  Craft (Metal), Graphics, Rapid Response Engineering Challenge (RREC) IDL (Interdisciplinary Learning Unit).
  1. S3 ( 3x 40 min periods)- BGE Practical Woodwork, BGE Graphic Communication.
  2. S4 (5x 40min periods) - National 2 & 3 Practical Craft Skills, National 4 & 5 Practical Woodworking and National 4 & 5 Graphic Communication.

Extra Curricular Activities.

 Junior Ranger Program.

 This program is currently offered to S2 Pupils on a first come first served basis, provided entry requirements are met.

The program aims to engage young people in the Cairngorms National Park area, providing them with opportunities to develop skills, gain experience, and build confidence while promoting environmental stewardship. The project involves different activities, including school programs, monthly programs, expeditions, and recognizes achievements through the Scottish Countryside Ranger Association (SCRA).
At present our Junior Rangers program is led by various local Ranger Services:

  • Cairngorms National Park, Ranger Will George
  • Blair Athol Estates, Ranger Julia Duncan.
  • National Trust for Scotland (Killiecrankie) Ranger Ruth Alexander.
  • Forestry & Land Scotland, Ranger Jeanie Grant.
  • Highland Perthshire Community Land Trust, Ranger Heather Hamilton.
  • Durrel Estates, Dalnacardoch, Estate Managers Lucy Groves/Sam Buckland.

At present the Junior Rangers program consists of a 5 day induction. (4 days out of school, 1 day in school). This now takes place in June, before the holidays.

This is followed by one day per month out of school until the June holidays.

 Roads of the Future Competition

This is a competition  run, in conjunction with Academy 9, over a six week period usually around April. It is currently open to S2 pupils. The teams have to design and present a Road of the Future that conforms to Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) comprised by the United Nations.
The teams are advised by an Academy 9 Engineer, and they present their Roads at the end of the 6 weeks. Winners are then invited to take part in a Scottish Final in Perth.

In the past, Pitlochry High School have been very successful gaining awards at 2nd and 3rd place.
